Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes among women enrolled in the Maternal and Child Health Program of the Social Security Fund of Panama during the 2018–2020 period. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study was conducted based on the analysis of records from molecular HPV detection tests performed in women attending the Maternal and Child Health Program. A total of 49,212 tests performed between 2018 and 2020 were analyzed. HPV16, HPV18, and other high-risk HPV genotypes (OHR-HPV) were evaluated. The analysis was performed by calculating prevalence rates and comparing proportions. Results: Of all tests analyzed, 77.3% corresponded to other high-risk HPV genotypes (OHR-HPV), 14.5% to HPV16, and 8.3% to HPV18. Single-genotype infections accounted for 90% of cases, while 10% involved coinfections. The highest proportion of tests was observed among women aged 40–49 years. The prevalence of OHR-HPV was significantly higher than the combined prevalence of HPV16 and HPV18 (p < 0.00001). Conclusions: High-risk HPV genotypes other than HPV16 and HPV18 were the most frequently detected in the study population. These findings demonstrate a predominance of OHR-HPV during the study period.
