Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes Detected in Patients at the National Association Against Cancer (ANCEC) Clinic in Panama City, Panama, from January through December 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is known to be associated with cervical cancer. In Panama, cervical cancer represents the second leading cause of gynecologic cancer. Objective: To determine the most frequent HPV genotypes in our population. Methods: Medical records from 2023 were reviewed at the Panama City branch of ANCEC (National Association Against Cancer). Patients who underwent HPV genotyping were included. The sample size was calculated based on a total population of 569 patients, with a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error, resulting in a required sample size of 230 patients. Results: A total of 200 patients (87%) had positive HPV genotyping results, while 30 (13%) had negative results. Among patients with positive results, 91% had high-risk oncogenic genotypes and 9% had low-risk genotypes. Conclusion: The results confirm the importance of cervical cancer screening through cytology and HPV genotyping, as well as preventive measures such as vaccination. Genotypes 16 and 18 were not the only frequently detected types; the most commonly identified genotypes, in descending order, were 45, 18, 16, 33, and 51.
