Abstract

The new training models in which the resident is the active and leading agent in their training require that the teacher change their fundamental role and in this context the figure of the tutor emerges. The medical residency tutor exercises his or her roles in various real areas of care practice, teaching resident physicians clinical and communication skills, clinical reasoning, and the execution of procedures in accordance with the program and the corresponding training level. The tutor must have specialized training and initial and continuing training processes in education are required to train those who practice university teaching. The tutorial function must have essential conditions for training such as availability of time, resources and infrastructure that favor the performance of tutoring. It is important that the tutor is recognized, valued, stimulated and compensated. Resident training institutions must recognize the importance of tutorial action, identify the profiles and accreditation criteria of their tutors. The lack of standards or regulations regarding tutoring in the medical specialty is recognized and it is important that health administrations, universities or teaching hospitals develop these standards or regulations.
