Abstract

EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia is a preanalytical phenomenon that can result in falsely low platelet counts, leading to misdiagnoses and unnecessary clinical interventions. This Letter to the Editor critically analyzes a published case in a pediatric population, highlighting the importance of timely recognition of this phenomenon in clinical laboratory practice. It emphasizes the value of the peripheral blood smear as a fundamental diagnostic tool, as well as the use of alternative anticoagulants, such as citrate, to confirm the diagnosis. Furthermore, observations are presented aimed at improving the description of clinical follow-up and strengthening the discussion of the preanalytical factors involved. This contribution seeks to promote the proper interpretation of laboratory results, prevent diagnostic errors, and foster evidence-based clinical practice.
